Huel protein shake

Huel protein shake

Huel is a protein drink and meal replacement in powder form. This powder can be mixed with water to make your fast breakfast shake. Is this something you can use as a runner? Let’s have a look at what’s inside and I’ll let you know what I think about it.

First let’s have a look at the product.

Huel Black edition comes in a resealable bag. It’s in powder form and comes with a little scoop. All you need is 2 scoops and 500ml of water. Shake it around for 10 seconds in the Huel shaker and it’s ready to drink.

There are 4 different flavours you can get, Vanilla, Chocolate, Coffee Caramel or unflavoured and unsweetened. If you’re in the States they also have Peanut Butter flavour. I went for vanilla, cause I’m just a vanilla kind a guy.

Huel Shaker

The taste is actually fine, I like the vanilla and there is not much else to it. The structure of it might be something to get used to. It’s not like a fruity smoothy, it’s more like a watery porridge kind of structure. But I don’t mind that, so I actually kind of like drinking it.

Now the idea is to get enough protein, fibre and vitamins with just one shake, so what is in it. In one serving you get 40 grams of protein, 26 vitamins and minerals and only 17 grams of carbs. It has no artificial sweeteners and is gluten free.

According to the Huel website there is a lot more to Huel than that. No animal products, it has a 1 year shelf life, it also has Omega 3 and 6 in it and a whole list of other benefits.

Now it’s not a weight loss product, but one serving only contains 400 kcal, so used in the right way while watching your calorie intake it could help you out with your diet plan while still getting enough nutrients as well.

As a runner I need my protein and as a vegetarian I need to have other sources for my protein than meat, so 40 grams in one serving that is pretty good and makes it a great breakfast drink for after my run.

Huel Hot and savoury

Now besides the vanilla breakfast shake they also have Huel Hot and Savoury, which is a just add water warm lunch meal. I’ve tried the shakes for a little while and I ordered the Hot and Savoury now. In January I will use them both for the entire month for breakfast and lunch to see what I think of it and judge if I feel any different because of it.

Where can you get it?

You can order it from the Huel website and it’s available all over the world. You can order just once or get a subscription to safe some money. A one time monthly supply will cost $83, so that’s about $2,44 per meal. With your first order you get a shaker and a free T-shirt, so you can look cool while drinking your breakfast.

If you’d like to order it or learn more about Huel you can use this link, it gives you a $10 discount on your order so check that out and I’ll let you know in a month how the use of the meals went for a month. So make sure you check back.
